I kind of forgot about this. I can't believe it's been a year since I've posted anything. I've knitted a couple of things, but I was pregnant for the bulk of my time away and had some sort of pregnancy related aversion to knitting. Here are a few things though.
Stan hat I made for my cousin Candis. She looks very happy to be wearing it :)
Slytherin Scarf I FINALLY finished for my sister.
And my best finished object ever, Tristan :)
I realized today how long it's been since I posted over here. This is mostly do to my knitting ADD. I have a million projects going and none even close to being done. I get really excited about a project, start it, and then a little bit in grow bored with it. I kind of hate it. Hopefully I'll be out of my knitting rut soon. I actually stumbled across a pattern for a gorgeous lace scarf that I have the perfect yarn for. I'm considering starting it and am hoping that it brings me out of my funk. Keep your fingers crossed.
Those are my mini clapotis. I'm about 5 straight row repeats away from it being done. It's going to be a belated birthday gift for a friend (along with some home made bath salts, and a few knitting notions). The middle picture is the most accurate, color wise. Right now it's just about 3 feet, so it'll probably clock in at around 4 feet when I'm done (which will be soon). Unfortnately, I can't find my blocking pins. I remember seeing them fairly recently, but they are now nowhere to be found. I'm very disappointed.
Oh, and the yarn is Patons SWS in Natural Blue. I love this yarn. As soon as I finish this, I'm going to work on my mother's full sized Clapotis (for mother's day) out of Malabrigo, and then I'm going to make myself one out of more Patons SWS (this time in Natural Earth). Mmmmm...
Edit: Finished her up! Just barely made it with about 2-3 yards of yarn left. Go me. I'm blocking it now, and it should be just under 5 feet after blocking. I'm a little nervous, as I've never made anything that really needed blocking before. I think it'll turn out all right. It's so pretty that I almost don't want to gift it. I love the colors and the way they change in the pattern. Can't wait to knit a full sized one now!
So I've organized most of my yarn stash and I have a ridiculous amount of yarn. I did the math for what I had rolled into center pull balls and put into a tub for storage and I have 11, 217 yards of yarn. That's about 6.4 miles worth of yarn. I own over 6 miles worth of yarn. Crazy, eh?

And that's Just what I have catalogued. I have a ton more yarn left to do :/ I think I have a problem.
So for awhile now, I've been wanting to learn how to spin my own yarn. I just think it would be really awesome to be able to give someone a gift that I made, starting with nothing more than a hunk of wool and a drop spindle. I bought a drop spindle kit from Hello Yarn (I highly reccomend them), which included a top whorl drop spindle (very nice, by the way), some corridale top (I got 8oz each of charcoal and teal. The colors are gorgeous, especially the teal. Nice, deep tones), spinning instructions, and a little bit of predrafted fiber. I sat down to try it out about 20 minutes ago. It looked like everything was coming along just dandy. I was very excited, because the fiber was starting to look like yarn. And then... the twist came out. So now all I have is unspun fiber. It was possibly one of the most disappointing things ever in all of my crafting years. I'm thinking I might sign up for some spinning lessons. This is something I very much want to learn how to do; however, I'm not sure that I have the patience to teach myself. Just wanted to share.
Knit a Jayne hat (from Firefly... great show if you've never seen it). It was a birthday gift for a friend. Made with Lamb's Pride Bulky in rust red, orange you glad and, um.. lemon drop I think. I didn't think to take a picture with my camera and it's already been gifted, so all I have is a crappy cell phone picture. Oh well.
As part of a knit swap I'm in, I recieved two plain glass mugs to be etched by me. I got them last night and went to work right away. The front design is the same on both. It's the picture on the front of one of our D&D books (The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, if you're curious. I really just liked the design, to be honest). There is a "J" on the back of one (for the Smellbot) and a "C" on the other for me.
I think I've found a new craft to obsess about.
I also recieved two balls of Rowan Tapestry, which is a wool/soy blend. The colors are gorgeous, and the yarn is a dream to work with. I've already cast on for the first of a pair of cabled wristwarmers (this pattern. Be warned - it goes to a PDF).
In other related news, Smells and I gave the wine glasses from my last post and the gift went over very well (both the wine and the glasses). So I think this etching thing is something I'll probably stick with. I get to make pretty things and I get to play with acid. It's everything a girl could hope for.
A couple that the Smellbot and I know recently bought their own condo. So he thought it would be a nice idea to buy them a house warming gift. I heartily agreed. Try as we might to come up with a good idea, nothing came to us. Called my mother and she suggested wine glasses and a bottle of wine. Perfect! Of course, me being me, I couldn't just give them plain old wine glasses. I recently found a tutorial for acid etching glass. And I thought it sounded like fun. So I gave it a whirl. Nothing to fantastic, but here are some of the results. I decided to use a Celtic knot design (and a fairly simple one at that).
Before cutting out the pattern, after cutting out the pattern, and after rinsing off the etching cream.
Pretty snazzy. Hopefully they like them. I made a set of 8.
So I started my mother's Calpotis the other day. So far, I'm really enjoying it. Malabrigo is a fantastic yarn and the colorway just screams my mother. I nixed the stitch markers in favor of purling the stitches to be dropped. Much easier than trying to keep track of a thousand tiny little rings. Anyway, on to the pictures. There are quite a few already, and I'm sure there will be many many more to come.
The middle one is the best representation of the actual color. I am completely loving this pattern so far (or course, I'm only on my 3rd repeat of the increase rows, so we'll see how I feel when I get to the straight rows).
Thank you so much! I really liked working with the SWS - I'm in love with the colors. read more
